Spiral welded pipe: It is made by rolling a low-carbon carbon structural steel or low-alloy structural steel strip into a pipe blank at a certain helical angle (called forming angle), and then welding the pipe seams together. It can produce large-diameter pipes using narrower strips. Its specifications are indicated by outer diameter * wall thickness. The welded pipe must ensure that the water pressure test, the tensile strength of the weld seam, and the cold bending performance meet the requirements.

The materials include ordinary and high-quality carbon structural steel (Q215-A to Q275-A and 10 to 50 grade steel), low-alloy steel (09MnV, 16Mn, etc.), alloy steel, and stainless acid-resistant steel.
According to their uses, they are divided into general-purpose ones (used for water and gas pipelines, structural components, mechanical parts) and specialized ones (used for boilers, geological exploration, bearings, acid resistance, etc.)

Strength characteristics

From the perspective of welding technology, the welding methods for spiral welded pipes and straight seam welded pipes are the same. However, straight seam welded pipes inevitably have many T-joint welds, which leads to a significantly increased probability of welding defects. Moreover, the welding residual stress at the T-joint welds is relatively large, and the weld metal is often in a three-dimensional stress state, thereby increasing the possibility of cracking.

The trend of pipeline development is towards larger diameters and higher strength. As the diameter of the steel pipe increases and the steel grade used rises, the tendency for the crack tip to expand steadily becomes greater. According to the tests conducted by relevant research institutions in the United States, although spiral welded pipes and straight seam welded pipes belong to the same grade, spiral welded pipes have higher impact toughness.

When the pipe is subjected to internal pressure, two main stresses are usually generated on the pipe wall, namely the radial stress δY and the axial stress δX. The combined stress δ at the weld is given by δ = δY (1/4 sin²2α + cos²α)^(1/2), where α is the helix angle of the spiral welded pipe weld.
